afflatus (n.) "miraculous communication of supernatural knowledge," 1660s, from L. afflatus "a breathing upon, blast," from pp. of afflare "to blow upon," from ad- "to" (see AD- (Cf. ad-)) + flare "to blow" (see BLOW (Cf. blow) (v.1)).
