excruciate 1560s, from L. excruciatus, pp. of excruciare "to torture, torment, rack, plague;" figuratively "to afflict, harass, vex, torment," from ex- "out, thoroughly" (see EX- (Cf. ex-)) + cruciare "cause pain or anguish to," lit. "crucify," from crux (gen. crucis) "cross."
