assertion early 15c., assercioun, from M.Fr. assertion (14c.) or directly from L.L. assertionem (nom. assertio), noun of action from pp. stem of L. asserere "claim rights over something, state, maintain, affirm," from ad- "to" (see AD- (Cf. ad-)) + serere "join" (see SERIES (Cf. series)). By "joining oneself" to a particular view, one "claimed" or "maintained" it.
