aristocratic (adj.) c.1600, "pertaining to aristocracy," from Fr. aristocratique, from Gk. aristokratikos "belonging to the rule of the best," from aristokratia (see ARISTOCRACY (Cf. aristocracy)). Meaning "grand, stylish" is from 1845.
