Augustan (adj.) 1640s, from L. Augustanus, "pertaining to AUGUSTUS (Cf. Augustus) (Caesar)," whose reign was connected with "the palmy period of Latin literature" [OED]; hence, "period of purity and refinement in any national literature" (1712).
