analgesic (adj.) "tending to remove pain," 1848, from ANALGESIA (Cf. analgesia) + -IC (Cf. -ic). Alternative form analgetic is preferred by linguistic purists but is less common in use. The noun meaning "an analgesic preparation" recorded by 1860.
