anadromous (adj.) of fish, "ascending a river to spawn" (as salmon do), 1753, from Gk. anadromos "running upward," from ana "up, back" (see ANA- (Cf. ana-)) + dramein "to run" (see DROMEDARY (Cf. dromedary)).
