ungulate (adj.) "hoofed," 1802, from L.L. ungulatus "hoofed," from ungula "hoof, claw, talon," dim. (in form but not sense) of unguis "nail" (see UNGUAL (Cf. ungual)). Ungulata, the order of hoofed mammals, is recorded from 1839.
