tendril

tendril
tendril 1530s, from M.Fr. tendrillon "bud, shoot, cartilage," perhaps a dim. of tendron "cartilage," from O.Fr. tendre "soft" (see TENDER (Cf. tender) (adj.)), or else from L. tendere "to stretch, extend" (see TENDER (Cf. tender) (v.)).
