surmount
surmount late 14c., "to rise above, go beyond," from O.Fr. surmounter "rise above," from sur- "beyond" + monter "to go up" (see MOUNT (Cf. mount) (v.)). Meaning "to prevail over, overcome" is recorded from late 14c.
