subterfuge 1570s, from M.Fr. subterfuge, from L.L. subterfugium "an evasion," from L. subterfugere "to evade, escape, flee by stealth," from subter "beneath, secretly" + fugere "flee" (see FUGITIVE (Cf. fugitive)).
