squamous 1540s, from L. squamosus "covered with scales, scaly," from squama "scale," perhaps related to squalus "foul, filthy" (see SQUALID (Cf. squalid)). M.E. had squame (late 14c.) "a scale," from O.Fr. esquame, from L. squama.
