somnambulism 1794 (as somnambulation), from Mod.L. somnambulus "sleepwalker," from L. somnus "sleep" (see SOMNOLENCE (Cf. somnolence)) + ambulare "to walk" (see AMBLE (Cf. amble)). Won out over noctambulation.
