Pomeranian type of dog, 1760, from Pomerania (Ger. Pommern, Pol. Pomorze), former province of Prussia (now Poland) on the south coast of the Baltic Sea, Medieval Latin, from Pomerani, name of a Slavic tribe there, from Pol. po morze "by the sea."
