Naples city in southern Italy, Italian Napoli, founded by Greek coloniests 5c. B.C.E., from Gk. Neapolis, lit. "New City," from nea, fem. of neos "new" (see NEO- (Cf. neo-)) + polis "city" (see POLICY (Cf. policy) (1)).
