palomino

palomino
palomino (n.) 1914, from Amer.Sp. palomino "cream-colored horse," from Sp., lit. "young dove," perhaps from It. palombino "dove-colored," from L. palumbinus "of wood pigeons," from palumba "wood pigeon" (see FALLOW (Cf. fallow) (adj.)). The horse so called because of its dove-like coloring, light brown or cream with a pale mane and tail.
