oriel

oriel
oriel "large recessed window," mid-14c., from O.Fr. oriol, perhaps from M.L. oriolum "porch, gallery" (mid-13c.), perhaps from V.L. *auraeolum, dissimilated from a dim. of L. aulaeum "curtain." Despite much research, the sense evolution remains obscure.
