neurasthenia (n.) "nervous exhaustion," 1854, medical Latin, from neur- (form of NEURO- (Cf. neuro-) before a vowel) + asthenia, from Gk. aisthesis "feeling," from PIE root *au- "to perceive" (see AUDIENCE (Cf. audience)). Related: Neurasthenic.
