miosis

miosis
miosis (n.) 1819, from Gk. myein "to shut (the eyes)" + -OSIS (Cf. -osis). Greek myein is perhaps originally "to close the lips," from PIE *meue- "to be silent" (see MUTE (Cf. mute) (adj.)). Related: Miotic.
