linden "the lime tree," 15780s, noun use of an adjective, "of linden wood," from O.E. lind "linden" (n.), from P.Gmc. *lindjo (Cf. O.S. linda, O.N. lind, O.H.G. linta, Ger. linde), probably from PIE *lent-o- "flexible" (see LITHE (Cf. lithe)); with reference to the tree's pliant bast. Cf. Rus. lutД­ijó "forest of lime trees," Pol. Е‚ét "switch, twig," Lith. lenta "board, plank."
