ketch (n.) kind of small sailing vessel, 1650s, earlier catch (mid-15c.), cache (late 14c.), probably from M.E. cacchen "to capture, ensnare, chase" (see CATCH (Cf. catch)). Cf. the sense development in YACHT (Cf. yacht).
