indignity (n.) 1580s, "unworthiness," also "unworthy treatment; act intended to expose someone to contempt," from L. indignitatem (nom. indignitas) "unworthiness, meanness, baseness," also "unworthy conduct, an outrage," noun of quality from indignus "unworthy" (see INDIGNATION (Cf. indignation)).
