imbricate (v.) 1704 (implied in imbricated), from L. imbricatus "covered with tiles," pp. of imbricare "to cover with rain tiles" (see IMBRICATION (Cf. imbrication)). As an adjective from 1650s. Related: Imbricated; imbricating.
