hermeneutic
hermeneutic "interpretive," 1670s, from Gk. hermeneutikos "interpreting," from hermeneutes "interpreter," from hermeneuein "to interpret," considered ultimately a derivative of Hermes, as the tutelary divinity of speech, writing, and eloquence. Cf. HERMETIC (Cf. hermetic).
