gastric 1650s, with -IC (Cf. -ic) + Gk. gaster (gen. gastros) "stomach," by dissimilation from *graster, lit. "eater, devourer," from gran "to gnaw, eat," from PIE root *gras- "to devour" (Cf. Gk. grastis "green fodder," L. gramen "fodder, grass," O.E. cærse "cress").
