fructify early 14c., from O.Fr. fructifiier (12c.) "bear fruit, grow, develop," from L.L. fructificare "bear fruit," from L. fructus (see FRUIT (Cf. fruit)) + root of facere "make" (see FACTITIOUS (Cf. factitious)). Related: Fructified; fructifying.
