fatherland 1620s, from FATHER (Cf. father) + LAND (Cf. land). In modern use often a loan-translation of Ger. Vaterland, itself a loan-translation of L. patria (terra), lit. "father's land." Late O.E./M.E. fæderland (c.1100) meant "parental land, inheritance."
