exemplary (adj.) 1580s, "fit to be an example," from M.Fr. exemplaire, from L. exemplaris "that serves as an example," from exemplum "example" (see EXAMPLE (Cf. example)). Earlier (early 15c.) as a noun meaning "a model of conduct."
