evaporation late 14c., from O.Fr. évaporation and directly from L. evaporationem (nom. evaporatio), noun of action from pp. stem of evaporare "disperse in vapor or steam," from ex- "out" (see EX- (Cf. ex-)) + vapor "steam" (see VAPOR (Cf. vapor)).
