espadrille shoe with soles of hemp-rope (originally worn in the Pyrenees), 1892, from Fr. espadrille (17c.), from Prov. espardillo, from L. spartum, from Gk. sparton "a rope made of spartos," an imported fiber known as "Spanish broom."
