enclitic 1650s (adj.); 1660s (n.), from L.L. encliticus, from Gk. enklitikos "throwing its accent back," lit. "leaning on," from verbal adj. stem of enklinein "to bend, lean on," from en (see EN- (Cf. en-) (2)) + klinein "to lean" (see LEAN (Cf. lean) (v.)).
