disenchant 1580s, from M.Fr. desenchanter (13c.), from des- (see DIS- (Cf. dis-)) + enchanter "to enchant" (see ENCHANT (Cf. enchant)). Related: Disenchanted; disenchanting; disenchantment. Carlyle coined disenchantress (1831).
