denationalize 1807, "to deprive of nationality," from Fr. dénationaliser (said in contemporary English publications to have been coined by Napoleon Buonaparte; denapoleonize was coined shortly thereafter); see DE- (Cf. de-) + NATIONALIZE (Cf. nationalize).
