hind
{{11}}hind (adj.) c.1300, "rear, back," perhaps a back formation from O.E. behindan "back, behind," used as adverb and preposition, or from or influenced by O.E. hindan (adv.) "from behind," from P.Gmc. *hind- "behind" (cognate with Goth. hindan (prep.) "on that side of, beyond, behind;" Ger. hinten "behind"), of unknown origin. Possibly influenced by M.E. hiner (adv.) "back, rear."
{{12}}hind (n.) "female deer," O.E. hind, from P.Gmc. *hinthjo- (Cf. O.N. hind, Du. hinde, O.H.G. hinta, Ger. Hinde "hind") perhaps from PIE *kemti-, from root *kem- "hornless" (Cf. Gk. kemas, Lith. smulas "young deer, gazelle").
