bream
bream (n.) freshwater fish, late 14c., from O.Fr. braisme "bream," from Frankish *brahsima, from W.Gmc. *brahsm- (Cf. O.H.G. brahsima), perhaps from P.Gmc. base *brehwan "to shine, glitter, sparkle," from PIE *bherek- (see BRAID (Cf. braid) (v.)).
