biotin vitamin of the B group (also sometimes called vitamin H) essential for the growth of yeast, 1936, from Ger. Biotin (1936), from Gk. biotos "life" (see BIO- (Cf. bio-)) + chemical suffix -IN (Cf. -in) (2).
