assort (v.) late 15c., "to distribute into groups," from M.Fr. assortir (15c.), from O.Fr. assorter "to assort, match," from a- "to" (see AD- (Cf. ad-)) + sorte "kind" (see SORT (Cf. sort)). Related: ASSORTED (Cf. Assorted); assorting.
