anomaly (n.) 1570s, from L. anomalia, from Gk. anomalia "inequality," noun of quality from anomalos "uneven, irregular," from an-, privative prefix, "not" (see AN- (Cf. an-) (1)) + homalos "even," from homos "same" (see SAME (Cf. same)).
