adventitious (adj.) "of the nature of an addition from without," c.1600, from M.L. adventitius "coming from abroad, extraneous," a corruption of L. adventicius "foreign, strange, accidental," from advent- pp. stem of advenire "arrive" (see ADVENT (Cf. advent)).
