acerbic (adj.) 1865, originally, and usually, figurative: "sour, harsh, severe" (of speech, manners, etc.), from L. acerbus "harsh to the taste, sharp, bitter, sour" (see ACERBITY (Cf. acerbity)) + -IC (Cf. -ic).
