{{12}}zany (n.) comic performer, 1580s, from Fr. zani, from It. zani, zanni "a zany, clown," originally Zanni, Venetian dialect variant of Gianni, pet form of Giovanni "John." A stock character in old comedies, he aped the principal actors.
