vend (v.) late 14c., from L. vendere "to sell, praise," contraction of vendumare "offer for sale," from venum "for sale" (see VENAL (Cf. venal)) + dare "to give" (see DATE (Cf. date) (n.1)). Related: Vended; vending. Vending machine is recorded from 1895.
