unsightly early 15c., "displeasing to the eye," from UN- (Cf. un-) (1) "not" + sightly (see SIGHT (Cf. sight)). Cf. M.Du. onsichtlijc "invisible, ugly," M.H.G. unsihtlih "invisible."
