traitor (n.) c.1200, from O.Fr. traitor (11c.), from L. traditorem (nom. traditor) "betrayer," lit. "one who delivers," from stem of tradere "deliver, surrender" (see TRADITION (Cf. tradition)). Originally usually with a suggestion of Judas Iscariot.
