testosterone (n.) male sex hormone, 1935, from Ger. Testosteron (1935), coined from a presumed comb. form of L. testis "testicle" (see TESTIS (Cf. testis)) + ster(ol) (see STEROID (Cf. steroid)) + chemical ending -ONE (Cf. -one).
