superannuated "retired on account of old age," 1630s, "obsolete, out of date," from M.L. superannuatus "more than a year old" (of cattle), from L. super "beyond, over" (see SUPER- (Cf. super-)) + annus "year" (see ANNUAL (Cf. annual)).
