suffocation late 14c., from M.Fr. suffocation, from L. suffocationem (nom. suffocatio) "a choking, stifling," from pp. stem of suffocare "suffocate," originally "to narrow up," from sub "up (from under)" (see SUB- (Cf. sub-)) + fauces (pl.) "throat, narrow entrance."
