subvert late 14c., "to raze, destroy, overthrow," from M.Fr. subvertir, from L. subvertere, from sub "under" (see SUB- (Cf. sub-)) + vertere "to turn" (see VERSUS (Cf. versus)). Related: Subverted; subverting.
