stature c.1300, "height," from O.Fr. stature, from L. statura "height, size of body, size, growth," from stare "to stand," from PIE root *sta- "to stand," with derivatives meaning "place or thing that is standing" (see STET (Cf. stet)). Figurative sense first recorded 1834.
