sedulous (adj.) 1530s, from L. sedulus "attentive, painstaking," probably from sedulo (adv.) "sincerely, diligently," from sedolo "without deception or guile," from se- "without, apart" (see SECRET (Cf. secret)) + dolo, ablative of dolus "deception, guile," cognate with Gk. dolos.
